![]() Unfortunately, while I wish everyone could enjoy the Playdate now, there is some bad news. Paired with the beep boops of the gameplay and the striking yellow color of the case, the Playdate has a quirkiness that makes it unique. ![]() There's a crank on the right side of the console that you can satisfyingly pull out and rotate, giving you a new way to interact with many (though not all) games on the system. At a time when you can download hundreds of games at a whim and play them on your smartphone with top-tier graphics, it's enamoring to see the skill that game developers can exhibit on a system that lacks the same luxuries.Ī part of what makes the experience of playing games on the Playdate even more magical is the crank. I've played a roguelike game as a samurai, a point-and-click adventure game where you have to figure out whether the aliens that kidnapped you decades ago really have returned, and even Snake-er, Snak as it's called here, since it's not an official port of the classic Nokia title. This is a handheld console with a positively tiny black and white 1-bit display and a meager 400- by 240-pixel resolution, yet the games I've come across on it are inventive and fun enough you'll wish everyone carried one of these pocket-friendly yellow squares around. A digital copy of this game was provided to SimpleGameReviews for the purposes of reviewing the game. Those are the three words I frequently mouthed before excitedly bringing the Playdate over to my partner to show her. Party Panic is available on Xbox One, PS4 and Steam. While playing you will notice the characters making random weird facial expressions to other characters or just at random times. The art style is a little cartoonish with the characters having very long arms and large heads. We also had issues with the camera clipping through walls while exploring Trophy Island. Some games appeared more often in the rotation than others so that we had played the same mini-games a few times before seeing new ones. While playing the Board Game mode we noticed that it picks the games in a truly random way. We ran into an issue where our character did not spawn into a minigame forcing us to sit out on that game. These issues stand out the most while driving the car and during some of the precise platforming. Some of the challenges are enjoyable while others are very challenging due to issues with the game mechanics/physics. While in Gooberland you will have to complete challenges in order to collect some of the trophies. There are some areas that are blocked off initially and get unlocked by exploring and interacting with the environment. Trophy Island – You get to free roam and explore Gooberland trying to locate and collect trophies. We would have liked to see the option to have the character move by themselves to help expedite the game play. You can also choose to punch or kick your opponents when you’re passing them. This lets you explore the board and figure out where your character will stop or which path you will choose to take. They made the choice of having you manually move your character around the board. After everyone completes their moves it loads into a random minigame. You will need to roll a dice and move around the board. ![]() ![]()
